Dreams

“I had a dream one night that I was walking down a path having a conversation with someone about the meaning of life. I came to the understanding that there was a huge reality consisting of the spiritual realm that we had so little comprehension of, and God knew that the weight of the Whole Truth, the Spiritual Reality, was too heavy for us to bare, so He created the physical, as if it is only a small ball in the whole scheme of Reality, and that ball contains our stars and galaxies and entire universe. Our life here allows us to practice living without the weight of the Whole Truth or Spiritual Reality. We get only glimpses of it. And when we die, we will pass into this “real world” armed with the knowledge and wisdom gained in the physical life.
At this point in the dream, I climbed into a car to drive somewhere, but three evil spirits climbed in the back seat with me. I was now more aware of the spiritual world. I immediately prayed for God to send me a good spirit to go with me and help me. So God did, and the good spirit got into the passenger’s side and it was Chris.”
I wrote this in April 2013, and I think about it every once in a while. I don’t know a lot about dreams but I think they are fascinating. It’s almost like our conscious awareness steps out of the way for a few hours and lets the subconscious take over. And you never know what is going to come up during that time because it is… well… subconscious.
I have been thinking about this subject more than usual lately because we live with many people of the Muslim faith, and they take dreams and the meaning of dreams very seriously. In the western culture, I think we often dismiss dreams as indigestion or too much caffeine or an overactive imagination. But I think we should be careful to dismiss ideas too quickly just because they don’t fit nicely into our world view. We have heard a couple of very interesting dream encounters since we have been here. Recently, a young boy that we have gotten to know pretty well came to our house. I have a chalk board and some chalk that I sometimes use to do school with Ruth Michael. The boy started drawing on the board with the chalk. Chris walked over and asked him what he was drawing, and he simply replied, “This is a man I have seen in a dream.” You can see the boy and his picture in the drawing below.

At an earlier occasion, Chris was spending time with another young man who was very ill and close to the end of his life. One day, the boy's older sister called Chris and asked him to come over because they were all worried about the boy. When Chris arrived and asked what was wrong, the sisters and mother said that the boy wouldn't let any of them sit next to him on the bed because his friend was sitting there. When Chris asked him who this friend was, the boy said, “He is a friend that comes and sits with me, and he asks me if I am ready to receive my gold.” The boy’s sisters and mother assured Chris that no such friend had been coming by. He said he was not yet ready to receive his gold, but just a few days before passing away, he told Chris he was now ready.
I think both dreams and the nearness of death heighten our spiritual awareness. It’s hard to know what these things mean, but I also don’t want to dismiss it altogether because I can’t understand. I will continue to search and listen and ask questions, collecting tiny pieces of an enormous jigsaw puzzle. And maybe, one day, I will see the whole picture.
